Our team

Most of the our team, (i.e., the core of the team) was gathered around a series of projects and joint papers, as deliverables of national project TR36009 on TLS and GNSS applications in ground motion monitoring. There team already have more than ten related papers since 2011 onward, including proceeding and journal papers dedicated to TLS and other monitoring techniques applied to landslides and rockfalls, which witnesses the group’s dedication, experience and good cooperation in working together. Finally, there is successfully completed pilot project MEĐA, which is another fact to support this view. Appended specialists and other team members are young, and cooperative, and have closely worked with one of the core members/key specialists in other projects. Gender equality, especially in science, is also an important issue for us, which is why our team has 7 female and 8 male members.

Assoc. Prof. Miloš Marjanović, PhD
Principal investigator

Miloš is an associate professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. He is a specialist in the field of natural hazards hosted in both, rock and soil, with rich scientific research experience. Although his background is in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics, his research interests include instabilities and their prediction at various scales, from rock slope cuts to regional assessment. At his host institution, he teaches courses that relate to the topic of the DEMONITOR project (Rock Mechanics, Geological Hazards).

He is well-experienced in both domestic and international projects, including UNDP and WB-based projects, consultancies and invited lecturing/mobilities. He has good networking with research groups from abroad (Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, North Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia).

Together with other team members, he has successfully presented and published several papers at international and domestic conferences regarding TLS/LiDAR applications in rockslope monitoring, which is the core of the proposed project. During his PhD he was lecturing in Remote Sensing and attended relevant ESA and DLR courses on InSAR techniques and has a profound knowledge of Remote Sensing application in instability inventorying and their prediction in the Natural Hazards framework.

He has profound knowledge in modeling and simulating rock stability, which is essential for respective project objectives. He was also the PI in the pilot project MEĐA, where he exhibited good managerial and organizational skills. He is very active in scientific publishing and has a high citation rate (as of current 770 in total, with h-index 10).

For these reasons, he will be coordinating Work Package 3 and take part in all other work packages.

Assoc. Prof. Marko Pejić, PhD
Key Member – WP Acquisition

Marko is an associate professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. He is a specialist in the field of Geodesy with a PhD completed in applied TLS, rich research and consulting experience, and profound geodetic knowledge, which is essential for the successful implementation of the project for most of the proposed acquisition systems. He will lead the Work Package 2 – Acquisition, given his expertise in applied Geodesy, and long record of working with geoscientists, which grants him a broader understanding of the specific data requirements that this project entails.

Assoc. Prof. Dragana Đurić, PhD
Key Member – WP Coordination

Dragana is an associate professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. She is a specialist in the field of Geophysics with PhD completed in applied Geophysics using various acquisition techniques, with rich research and consulting experience. Her profound knowledge of Seismic and geoelectric, as well as Remote Sensing is essential to respective parts of DEMONITOR project (SRT, ERT, UAV, InSAR). However, she will be leading Work Package 1 – Coordination, as someone who has excellent understanding of the entire research framework and all required managing skills, but will take valuable part in most of other Work Packages..

Assist. Prof. Uroš Đurić, PhD
Key Member – WP Promotion

Uroš is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering and a rising specialist in the field of Geotechnics with his PhD completed in landslide hazard estimation using various monitoring techniques, with rich research and consulting experience. His profound knowledge and certified training in UAV and InSAR are of great importance to respective parts of DEMONITOR project. On the other hand, his excellent social skills and promotion experience will be of crucial importance for Work Package 4 – Promotion, but will take part in most of other Work Packages.

Assoc. Prof. Mileva Samardžić-Petrović, PhD
Specialist for Applied Geodesy

Mileva is an associate professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. She is a specialist in the field of applied Geodesy, including spatial modelling, with a PhD completed in the corresponding field. Her research and consulting experience will be of high value for implementing specific project tasks, especially for acquisition and processing using TLS, UAV in combination with GNSS. She would closely cooperate with Marko and associated WP2.

Prof. Biljana Abolmasov, PhD
Specialist for Engineering geology and Geotechnics

Biljana is a full professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. She is a specialist in Engineering-geology and Geotechnics, and the true mentor of the team, as her previous projects involved almost all participants in one way or another (through research, joint papers, and other scientific activities). Her experience, knowledge and wisdom, will be of the utmost value for putting this project on track and running. As of current, she is the Dean of the FMGUB and her mandate would overlap with the project inception and early stage, meaning that she can improve the project visibility. She will be an irreplaceable helping hand in WP1 and WP4.

Assist. Prof. Zoran Berisavljević, PhD
Specialist for Rock Mechanics and Remediation

Zoran is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. He is a specialist in rock mechanics and remediation geotechnics, with rich research and consulting experience. His PhD topic considered rock weathering and deterioration of strength with time, so his inputs will be of the highest importance in stability modeling, predictive models and remediation design. He will be an excellent asset to the core team (PI and Key Experts) and valuable hand in operative modeling tasks to the PI within the WP3.

Assist. Prof. Dušan Berisavljević, PhD
Specialist for Soil Mechanics and Remediation

Dušan is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. He is a specialist in soil mechanics and remediation geotechnics, with PhD completed in the respective field. His role is in excellent alignment with the modeling tasks, even though he is coming from seemingly unrelated, Soil Mechanics background. Namely, as incohesive material, the talus at the base of the Devils’ town pillars will require soil mechanic approach, especially the drainage, deformations, stresses, among other issues. His role will be indispensable for the effectiveness and flexibility of the remediation design measures we will propose within the WP3.

Assist. Jelka Krušić

Jelka is a teaching at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. She is a young specialist in the field of Engineering Geology and Geotechnics, with her PhD topic on debris flow modelling, which can be tightly related to specific parts of the erosional processes acting at the “Devils’ town” site. Her role in the modeling of the “soft” phase will be essential for assessing stability at the base level of the pillars. She also has a solid background in 3D printing, which is an important deliverable. She will be otherwise engaged in other tasks throughout the project and will be working with all mentioned specialists.

Assist. Prof. Nenad Brodić, PhD

Nenad is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. He is a young scientist and researcher in the field of applied Geodesy, with particular research interests in UAV photogrammetry. He will be of particular help in WP2, also helping with the sensors and signal processing in building intermediate surface models. He will be closely working with P1 and P3.

Assist. Anastasija Martinenko

Anastasija is a teaching assistant at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. She is a young researcher in the field of applied Geodesy, which has not yet established a particular research direction, but conveniently, applied photogrammetry and TLS seem like one of the choices, and experience from this project could be decisive. She will also be important in WP2 acquisition for processing raw TLS and photogrammetric data and will be closely cooperating with P1 and P4.

Assist. Branislav Sretković

Branislav is a teaching assistant at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology. He is a young specialist in the field of Geophysics, with his PhD topic on seismic refraction and geoelectrical methods for stability and structural changes in rock mass. He will be of particular help in WP2. His main role will be in geophysical survey and data processing and analysis.

Assist. Ksenija Micić

Ksenija is a teaching assistant at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering and she is a fresh PhD candidate who has just completed her Master’s degree in the field of rock slope stability. Her role will depend on her future interests and potentially her PhD topic and will cooperate with most of the team.

Assoc. Prof. Bojana Grujić, PhD

Bojana is an associate professor from the University of Banja Luka (B&H). She is an expert in Civil Engineering, but with a strong background in natural hazard processes, in particular subsidence and other types of displacements that are traceable using InSAR and similar techniques. Her expertise will be needed in the WP2 and WP3, i.e., within InSAR data acquisition and processing. She will be closely working with PI, P2 and P3 on that task, while her Civil Engineering will be useful in the final outputs of the project, regarding potential non-disturbing remediation options. Her strong network with Yamaguchi University in Japan where she completed her PhD and currently runs a postdoc grant would be very valuable to the team.

Assoc. Prof. Igor Peševski, PhD

Igor is an associate professor from St. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje (North Macedonia). He is a Geotechnical engineer specialising in Natural Hazard Assessment, landslides in particular (the field of his completed PhD). His principal role will be to attempt to link and network our case study with the example of the Kuklice site, which has undergone the initial phase of monitoring using UAV in 2021, but needs further elaboration and a more detailed approach. Igor will be closely working with the entire team for that reason and will be enrolled in WP2 activities.
